Powder compaction technology

The theoretical target is to achieve equal density all over the compacted material - in practice, a density distribution as uniform as possible.

Even with a simple shape (a cylindrical part as illustrated at right), density in the compacts will not be uniform. Density distribution is mainly a function of:

  • the friction forces between the powder and the die
  • the compacting action of the punches

Using lubricants allows you to reduce the effects of the friction forces.

Using a double-action press or a press with a floating table allows you to manufacture compacts with improved density distribution (see diagram at left).

Consequently, even in these simple compacts density distribution will not be the same.

Powder characteristics

Key characteristics that must be known before compaction of any kind of powder include:

  • flowability
  • compressibility diagram
  • friction force distribution in the die
